Jacob did deceive.

When Jacob was cooking the stew, Esau sold the firstborn right. But he deceived his father by disguising as Esau...

Jacob is not a deceiver?

I thought I was taught that the name Jacob meant 'deceiver'.

The Blue Letter says that Jacob means supplanter or heel holder. When I read the Jewish commentaries here and there on the internet, it doesn't look like they see Jacob as a deceiver. I have been slowly researching but haven't come to my personal conclusion. When we discuss Jacob's story in a bible study without consulting the original meaning and by simply comparing the different translations, our opinions are usually based on the image of Jacob as a deceiver. But what if he wasn't a deceiver??? We have to think about this. I am not talking about the salvation through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. I just wonder why the Jewish people's understanding of the Bible is not valued so much...my simple questions.

Another surprising word I learned about Jacob is that while his brother was a cunning hunter, the Bible says that Jacob was a 'plain' man who dwelt in the tent. Then we who read the translated Bible create certain images of both of them in our head. The word plain, in original language, means this according to the Blue Letter Bible.
1) perfect, complete
a) complete, perfect
1) one who lacks nothing in physical strength, beauty, etc
b) sound, wholesome
1) an ordinary, quiet sort of person
c) complete, morally innocent, having integrity
1) one who is morally and ethically pure

Look who Esau, a cunning hunter, is like according to the Blue Letter Bible. This is what the translated word, cunning, means in Hebrew.

3) to know (a person carnally)

b) (Niphal)
