Gnesis 18:1-22:24 is titled "And he appeared".
The title is usually taken from the beginning of the portion. The LORD and two men appeared where Abraham was - at the door of the tent. According to the commentaries I read, this was when Abraham was hurting the most after the circumcision.
I see that Abraham is quick to obey God's words and he is kind. He let Lot decide which land to take first. When Lot was captured by the enemy Abraham took his men and left to rescue him. (Then apparently Lot went back to his wicked city.)
Now the LORD showed up, Abraham ran to meet them, then he asked them (there were three men and one of them was the LORD) not to pass away. He said he would bring a
little water to wash their feet, and a
morsel of bread. Then he
hurried to Sarah and asked her to bake a
large bread with
fine flour, then ran to
fetch a calf tender and good (he picked it himself), and told the young man to dress it. Then he took the butter, milk and the calf to the men. Abraham stood by them while they ate.
Let's compare Lot to Abraham.
Lot chose the best-looking land when he had a chance to choose land. When the two of the men who visited Abraham went on to Sodom where Lot lived, he told them that they could wash their feet with water and spend the night. And Lot cooked flat bread.
It is good to start out humble and do the best you can instead of speaking big and then not do so well?
Lot's two daughters' sons are the beginning of the Moabites and the Ammonites.

Once I read a book written by Merlin Carothers. He practices rejoicing and praising in everything because God is in control. I decided to keep reading without skipping to my heart's content though I don't read fast. Because God is in control and He will teach me things I need to hear. I believe!
A good thing happened while I was trying to catch up. Something new I saw made me smile.
He (Abram) believed, and he was declared righteous. ( Genesis) The original word for 'believe' is 'amen'. Abram 'amen'-ed, and God declared him righteous. Interesting.

I saw something interesting in
Genesis 15:9.
What is a heifer?
My English-Japanese dictionary says a female cow under 3 years old which has not produced a calf.
One commentary said that 3 yeas old is ceremonially mature (for sacrifice).
The dictionary.com said 'a young cow over one year old that has not produced a calf.'
So, it must be a mature female cow who hasn't had a baby. ( But ready to have one anytime?)
Then a female goat.
Then a ram. What is a ram? Please see
this.It is a mature male sheep.
Right before God told Abram to bring these animals, Abram asked a question.
(Genesis 15:8) But he said, "O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?"
Then God answered him.
I don't know why I thought of this but the heifer is almost like Sarai and the ram is almost like Abram.

Shem's descendant Terah's sons are Abram, Nahor and Haran. (Gen 11)

Haran had Lot, Milcah and Iscah. Haran died in Ur.

Nahor took Milcah as his bride and stayed in Ur. Iscah apparently stayed behind, too, since his name is not among those who left Ur.

Terah, Abram, Lot, and Sarai left Ur and came unto Haran, and dwelt there. This "Haran" is actually "Charan" (Ch pronounced as in Bach), yet in the Blue letter Bible and other places said
Charan (where they dwelt) and
Haran (Abram's brother) both has the same meaning of 'mountaineers'. Plus Charan has more meanings.

I had a little trouble
here. I read that Abram built
2 alters. #1 in Sichem, #2 in the east of Bethel. Sichem is north of Bethel. I had trouble reading on because after this Abram went down to Egypt where he lied and then went back up to the place where he built an alter. Which one? Back to the one he made the first alter? or back to the second alter where he called upon the name of the LORD?
Genesis 13:4 (King James Version)
Unto the place of the altar, which he had make there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.
Genesis 13:4 (New American Standard Bible)
to the place of the altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD. The NASB makes sense more because at the first alter Abram did not called on the name of the LORD. So I guess it is really the socond alter her made... I got stuck there for awhile, but I decided to go on. I will keep this in mind, though.

He went down further to Negev. Then went to Egypt. This Egypt in Hebrew is Mizraim. It is the name of one of Ham's sons. Ham is one of Noah's sons.

Then after Egypt, the scriptures say this:
Genesis 13 (King James Version)
1And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.
Other translation said he went to the Negev. Negev is north of Egypt. I used to wonder about that. Then found out that Negev means south. A-ha!

Lot had a lot of animals, too, so he departed from Abram. Abram is so nice. He let Lot choose his land. Lot chose east and journeyed on. The LORD spoke to Abram after Lot (his name means 'covering'), saying, 'Lift up your eyes and look...'.

The Jewish people call the gentiles 'Goym'. It actually means a nation. I still don't get it, but sometimes it means simply a nation and most of the time it means a gentile. How do you know which translation to use? I don't get it. When God made a promise to Abram, saying that God will make him a great nation(12:2), the original word is this 'goym'.
In Gen 14:1, four kings are mentioned. Some translations says different things. The original word for the fourth nation is 'goym'. Some translations says 'the king of Goiim'. If we have no interest in Hebrew language, this doesn't mean anything so we go on. Well, now that I am studying Hebrew, I happened to notice this, and to be honest, I don't know if it makes any difference like 'Negev' means, but still interesting.
Then there was a war. Four kings against five kings. The latter group included infamous Sodom and Gomorrah, and they lost. Lot was living in Sodom and was in trouble. One person escaped and went to Abram the Hebrew. Abram is called the Hebrew for the first time.. Hebrew, according to The Complete Word Study Old Testament, means descendants of Eber. Eber is Shem (Noah's son)'s great grand son. Eber means to cross over. Now I remember this name.
Gen 10:21 Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were [children] born.
I wonder why Eber is so significant.??

This is still the pre-law era.
Abram gave tithes---God appeared and made a promise ---Abram believed, so God counted it to him for righteousness---THEN circumcision AS a token of the covenant between God and Abram.
Here are some interesting verses to read together:
this (Genesis 17) and
this (Galatians 5).
If we read Paul's letter in Hebrew, I wonder if we would see any wordplay in it.

Ishmael is also circumcised.

It is a little blurry but this is what I have been doing to keep track of who's who.

God created Adam and Eve, then they had 3 sons and others.

Cain killed Abel, and Cain's line eventually disappeared.
Seth's line continued to Noah, and from Noah's sons 70 nations spread out.

I used to wonder who else around me would try to draw the bible genealogy. My God is so funny. My husband and I were invited to someone's house last night. My husband's friend's wife and I started talking about the Bible, and then she showed me what she was doing as she read from the beginning of he Bible.....the genealogy! She does hers with excel.
I shared with her about Noah's ark's window, too. She totally agreed with me.
